Be Kind to Where You Are

Here's something I've had to learn more than once: you cannot hate yourself into becoming someone you like.

I tried. I made lists of everything wrong with me and treated them like a project plan. It works for about a fortnight, and then it stops, because you are still there at the end of it, and you have taught yourself that the way to get better is to be unkind.

Be kind to where you are. Not because where you are is perfect — but because it's where the work has to happen, and nobody builds anything lasting on a site they keep calling a mess.

You are the one doing the building. Be decent to her.
