Grief

There Is Still Good

I'm not going to tell you it all works out. I don't know that, and you'd be right not to trust me if I said it.

What I can tell you is what I have noticed. On the worst days, there are still small true things. A dog that is pleased to see you. Bread still warm. Somebody's terrible parking. The particular light that comes in at four o'clock in winter.

Keeping a note of them isn't denial. It's maintenance. Not because the good outweighs the hard — it doesn't, some weeks — but because you need somewhere in your own head to stand.

Write down one true thing today. It can be tiny. It can be something nobody else would notice. That's usually where the real ones live.
